Description:
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as part of its child protection and education mission, obtained GPE (Global Partnership Education) funding in order to implement a project for the empowerment and protection of girls against sexual violence and child marriage in the DRC, particularly in Ituri Province. Thus, as part of this intervention, the construction of Thirty-eight (38) Safe Spaces is planned. commonly called TOYOKANA Spaces in several provinces in the Democratic Republic of Congo, including Seven (07) for the province concerned. A safe space is a safe place where women and girls feel physically and emotionally safe, able to express themselves and seek support. In the current context, the term safe refers to the absence of trauma, excessive stress, the risk of violence (fear of violence) or abuse, including sexual abuse. It is a space where women and girls, as the intended beneficiaries, feel comfortable and enjoy the freedom to express themselves without fear of being judged or harmed. A safe space is also a place where women and girls can come together to socialize, create social networks and participate in structured group activities that build their skills, confidence and resilience.
